J45 Project Guitar - Making a Rosette

Our original plan was to do a radial design but we ended up doing a block layout. Our process, shown in the pictures below went like this:

• Gathered cutoffs from the Amazon Rosewood back and other contrasting pieces that Howard had laying around
• Positioned the pieces in various orientations, checked with a see-through template, until settling on a design
• Trimmed and fit all the pieces for tight glue joints
• Glue the pieces together
• Sanded the assembled pieces flat
• Cut out the rosette with a router and circle cutting jig (outside radius first)
• Cut the channel in the soundboard for the rosette
• Glue in the rosette

Next up: put purfling lines around the rosette and cut the soundhole.

Tom Pafford's Rosette

After checking the relief and action, we determined that the neck needed to be reset. We removed the bolts holding on the neck and discovered that we had glued the fretboard extension. While we were waiting for the glue to dry on our pieced together rosette (above), we helped Tom install some purfling lines as a rosette. He used 2 pieces of BWB 0.060" thick purfling (total thickness of (0.120"). We used a 1/8" (0.125") bit to cut the channel using the circle cutting jig as above).
